A beautiful, still, warm evening was a perfect setting for this local friendly match. A bumper crowd of 378 were richly entertained by this action-packed encounter.
Church made a tremendous start with a beautiful move down the right; the early cross found Nicky Guest on the far post whose first touch controlled the ball and he blasted it low to the keeper's right.

Barnsley responded immediately with a couple of dangerous moves. Church’s defence held firm despite the pace and skill of the Barnsley players.
Church pressed high up the pitch and Barnsley started to find it hard to build their moves. However, after 15 minutes Barnsley started to find their feet and penned Church into their half. Church again withstood the pressure and played some nice one-touch football. Barnsley continued to look dangerous on the break and had several half chances, finishing with a header crashing off the bar to safety.
Church worked the ball through a packed defence on Barnsley’s right only for the chance to go narrowly wide with the goalie stranded. Barnsley returned the favour with a mesmerising dribble through the middle of Church's defence only for the shot to drift wide left.
A low Barnsley cross from the left beat 3 defenders and bobbled past Chris Snaith only for Cameron Simpson to misjudge the ball, it bounced off him into the net for an own goal.

Church reacted with 2 good chances and then Cameron Simpson nearly got on the scoresheet at the other end with a powerful free kick over the bar from 20 yards. Just before half time Barnsley created a good opening only for the shot to whistle over the bar.

Both teams were out early for the second half and there was speculation that the referee had got locked in the dressing room. As they emerged onto the pitch they were greeted with a warm if slightly sarcastic round of applause.
The pattern of end-to-end football continued from the first half, Church created a few openings and Barnsley broke dangerously, Church had a free kick on the right near the box, Nicky Guest met Cameron Simpson's cross, but the goalie saved well. Church created a couple more good chances but could not convert them.
The game continued to entertain with action at both ends. 70 minutes in and like Barnsley, Church brought on 8 substitutes.
Church opened up the Barnsley defence with several raking passes. Barnsley's defence held firm under pressure from a series of crosses from the right. Barnsley moved the ball through the middle and shot narrowly wide to the right of goal.
Church hit the bar with a looping header to the right of goal with the goalie floundering, Barnsley cleared the rebound and moved the ball across to the left and a miskick confused Church's defence. Immediately a double tackle resulted in a penalty. Andy Rhodes in the Church goal saved it low to his right.

Both teams were evenly matched and Church will look back on this game and should take pride in their overall performance. The crowd of 378 had been royally entertained by this end-to-end match with chances aplenty.
