Church had 7 shots on target and 9 off target to Bottesford’s 1 on target and 4 off. Church dominated long spells, but did not put the game out of reach until their third goal at 77 minutes.
There was a cold blustery wind, but given recent heavy rain the pitch was surprisingly good. The match got off to a frantic start with Church having 2 shots blocked in a session of ‘goalmouth pinball’ straight from the kick-off. Their third shot in this flurry was knocked wide for a corner. The match then settled into a rather one-sided pattern. Church broke up most of Bottesford’s play and those spells of possession that Bottesford had were then spoilt by loose play or excellent defensive work by Church.
The first goal followed a sustained spell of Church pressure. They pressed down each flank and the stretched Bottesford defence conceded a foul 30 yard out on the left. Sam Scrivens' free kick cleared everyone in the middle, but Ash Ellis was in the right spot to return the ball across the 6-yard box. Havoc in the Bottesford defence resulted in a poor header that Brett Lovell then flicked volleyed into the goal at the far post. The defender on the line was unable to keep the ball out.
1-0 to Church
Church continued to harry and press, disrupting Bottesford’s flow. However, Bottesford created a great chance with a driven ball from 35 yards out that swirled in the gusty wind, Chris Snaith in the Church goal did well to punch this away.
Church created a hatful of first half chances but it stayed 1-0 at half time.
The second half start with both teams at a very high tempo, again Church were having the better of the exchanges. They created 5 chances without reply. In the 61st minute, Bottesford were given a free kick in the Church half, this hit Luke Stewart and then the referee. The resulting drop ball to Church was belted down to the Right-hand corner for a throw-in. Church pinned Bottesford in and a good tackle sprung the ball to Jordan Coduri. The man of the match drilled the ball low and hard across the goalie from the right-handside of the box.
2-0 to Church
Kurtis Turner, the former Stocksbridge captain, came on for Church, he had an immediate impact. He and Danny Howes closed down space and forced Bottesford into an error. Danny Howes put in a great tackle and released the ball to Sam Scrivens in the middle of the pitch, he took it at full pace to the edge of the box scoring low to the left of the goalie with an 18-yard shot.
3-0 to Church
The match was all but over and to their credit both teams continued to seek more chances. It was Kurtis Turner who scored low and hard across the goalie from the right-hand side of the box, with almost the last kick of the game.
4-0 to Church
The all-ticket crowd of 150 went home happy, having seen a tremendous performance by The Church with 3 picture-book long range shots to keep them warm for our ‘Little Christmas’ break.
